Weedmaps Taxonomy is a Product classification system that helps:

• Businesses market their Products effectively to the right customer segments.
• Customers find the Products they want as efficiently as possible.

Weedmaps Taxonomy is comprised of two types of Tags:

• Category Tags classify Products based on their form (Infused Preroll Flower, Live Resin Badder Concentrate, Gummy Candy Edible).
• Discovery Tags describe Products based on their qualities (Sativa genetics, Sweet flavor, CBD-Dominant).

You use Category Tags to group Products by type, and you use Discovery Tags to associate Products by feature or characteristic.

This section focuses on how Taxonomy Tags work at a conceptual level. For a practical guide on how to apply Tags to Products, refer to Making Products Discoverable.

Tags for Master Products are set by the Master Brand and cannot be overridden.

Tag Groups

You can access Tags related to either a Category or Discovery Tag using the tag_group resource.

Category Tags

This section defines the available Category Tags that are part of the Weedmaps Taxonomy to help you determine which Category Tags are best suited for each Product.

Category Tags have hierarchical (parent/child) relationships.

Your Category Tag options are limited to the parent Category Tag. For example, if Topicals is the parent Category Tag, you can only pick a child sub-Category Tag (Sprays, Patches, Balms & Salves, Lotions, Lubricants & Oils, Bath, Bath Bombs, Soaking Salts).

It's recommended to be as specific as possible to ensure that customers/patients can drill down and find exactly what they want or need.

As much as possible, avoid selecting a Category Tag from only the topmost level. For example, assigning a variety of Products like shatter, crumble, and distillate to the “Concentrates” Category Tag alone would make a Menu too broad and cumbersome to browse.

Flower Product Category Tags

Weedmaps defines Flower as the smokeable, trichome-covered part of a female cannabis plant. Flower Products consist mostly of trimmed and cured flower.

Concentrates Product Category Tags

Weedmaps defines Concentrates as Products made from the cannabis plant that have been processed to keep the most desirable plant compounds (primarily the cannabinoids and terpenes), while removing excess plant material and other impurities. Concentrates come in a variety of formats and textures.

Customers and patients are able to search, filter, and browse Products on Weedmaps using Discovery Tags. Conceptually, they can be thought of as descriptors to help customers/patients find Products with particular characteristics they want (flower with a citrus flavor) or need (tinctures to bring a sleepy feeling).

Strains Discovery Tags

Any Custom Products in the flower, concentrate, or vape pen categories can be associated with a strain name, such as Blue Dream, OG Kush, Pineapple Express, and so forth.
